Rarely do people visit Hawaii to embark on several hikes throughout their trip. However, Hawaii is home to a number of picturesque hikes that will leave you stunned by the overgrowth of native foliage and abundance of wildlife. If you are a hiker that also enjoys a fair share of rest and relaxation, Kapalua is the perfect tropical destination for you. That’s why, in today’s post, we will be looking at a few of Maui’s top hiking spots so that you will have a better understanding of the many trailheads available to outdoor enthusiasts. While these hiking locations are not within the regions of Kapalua, they can be traveled to easily by car or shuttle.

Aloha Vacation Villas is the leading luxury villa rental company for both small and large groups alike. If you would like to learn more about some of the best hiking areas surrounding Kapalua, read more on the subject below.

Waihee Ridge Trail

If you are in the mood for a moderately difficult hike that rewards travelers with views of an incredible waterfall, Waihee Ridge Trail is the hike for you. While the initial uphill climb can be difficult for many hikers, Waihee Ridge Trail eventually tapers off where hikers can witness breathtaking views of Maui. Since Waihee Ridge Trail is a four-mile out and back hike, you should consider bringing plenty of water, snacks, and a jacket if you are expecting rainy weather. You should also be prepared to get your feet wet, as frequent rains can cause the trail to become muddy, which could be a potential hazard if you are not equipped with a proper pair of hiking shoes.

Iao Valley State Park

Those who love the feeling of being surrounded by towering mountains and an overgrowth of vegetation will find comfort in hiking throughout Iao Valley State Park. With several hiking trails, visitors can choose their own adventure while experiencing the tropical climate of Hawaii. If you decide to hike through Iao Valley State Park, consider trekking through the park’s Ethnobotanical Loop that showcases some of Hawaii’s native plant life. With more than 4,000 acres of territory, and nearly 10-miles of hiking trails, there is plenty to see at Iao Valley State Park. Most notably, hikers come to Iao State Park to get a glimpse of the Iao Needle, a 1,200-foot peak with an incredibly steep mountainside. Parking starts at five dollars per car, so be sure to bring extra cash if you plan on hiking through the Iao Valley wilderness.

West Maui Forest Reserve

While Iao Valley State Park is located within the West Maui Forest Reserve, there are a number of trails within the reserve worth discovering. For example, located in the Southern region of West Maui Forest Reserve lies Lahaina Pali Trail, a strenuous 10-mile hike that offers the most stunning views of Maui as well as its surrounding islands. Lahaina Pali Trail may not be suitable for everyone, however, its travelers will gain nearly 1,600 feet of elevation in less than three miles of hiking. To make your hike as enjoyable as possible, consider bringing an excess of water and food, as the Lahaina Pali Trail hike can take several hours to traverse.

If you would like to learn more about the many different hiking trails located throughout Maui, we suggest using one of the several hiking websites found online when planning which trailheads you would like to hike most. To learn about some of the lesser trafficked areas of Kapalua while planning your next Hawaiian escape, continue reading more on the subject below.

Maunalei Arboretum

Discovered by hiking along Mahana Ridge Trail, Maunalei Arboretum is an expansive forest that was planted by DT Fleming himself. While Maunalei Arboretum is accompanied by a hike spanning several miles, few make the effort to hike deeply into Hawaii’s lush forests. While hiking along Mahana Ridge Trail, you will be able to view native plants and wildlife while being enveloped by Hawaii’s dense foliage. Since no vehicles are allowed near the trailhead, it is a good idea to carry an adequate amount of water, snacks, and suitable clothing. Since inclement weather can sometimes be unexpected, you should also consider checking weather conditions before embarking on this daylong hike.

Napili Park

One of Kapalua’s lesser known parks, Napili Park is a great location for both families and individuals to enjoy a day of fun while soaking up the sunshine. Home to a baseball field, walking paths, soccer fields, and tennis courts, Napili Park offers the most in physical activity. Above all else, individuals visiting Napili Park seem to love its disc golf course most. Players will have to navigate through wooded areas and rolling hills while taking part in this five-basket course, and will enjoy picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean while competing against their friends.

Honokeana Bay

If you are looking for the best spot in Kapalua to view turtles while snorkeling in the warm waters of the Pacific, pay a visit to the quiet Honokeana Bay. Access to Honokeana Bay is limited, and can only be entered by climbing over rocky terrain, which makes it unsuitable for children and older individuals with impairments. This seldom visited cove is overrun with sea turtles that can be observed along the rocks or while snorkeling. Visitors who are looking to escape some of the crowded beaches of Kapalua will love Honokeana Bay for its seclusion and abundance of marine wildlife.

Kapalua Zipline

One of the best ways to see all of Kapalua is by taking a guided zipline tour offered by Kapalua Ziplines. Available as a five-line, six-line, or seven-line tour, Kapalua Ziplines offered unmatched views of the island while guests experience the wonderment of flight. If you happen to be traveling to Kapalua in the summer, consider Kapalua Zipline’s moonlight zipline, a special tour that allows guests to experience breathtaking views of Kapalua during the starry night. Zipliners will even have the chance to walk across the tallest and longest suspension bridge in all of Hawaii during their guided tour, making this a can’t miss opportunity adrenaline junkies.

The activities listed above are ideal for those who are wanting to escape the hustle and bustle that resorts generally experience. There are a number of hidden gems located throughout Kapalua, so outlining your trip before visiting is one of the best ways that you can take advantage of all that Hawaii has to offer. If you are looking for the top vacation rental company in Kapalua, browse Aloha Vacation Villas today. Luckily, there are a number of spots around Kapalua that are ideal for snorkeling and observing marine wildlife. That’s why, in today’s article, we will take a look at some of the best spots around the island for snorkeling enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the wonders of the Pacific Ocean.

Molokini Crater

Known for its abundance of marine wildlife, Molokini Crater is a notorious snorkeling and scuba diving location. While you cannot get to Molokini on your own, there are several snorkeling tours that take guests out to sea to experience hundreds of marine species. Interestingly enough, the Molokini Crater was not established as a Marine Life Conservation District until 1977. This ruling made Molokini a state seabird sanctuary, which restricts individuals from stepping foot onto its land. However, there are plenty of marine species such as parrotfish, moray eels, and yellow tang that can be observed up close underwater.

Napili Bay

If you are wanting to snorkel along a reef located near one of Kapalua’s top beaches, consider visiting Napili Bay for your next snorkeling adventure. Located near the Napili Bay Resort, the sandy beaches of Napili Bay are located less than 100 feet from a popular reef that is home to a variety of marine wildlife. Napili Bay is the perfect snorkeling destination for beginners as its waters are shallow and its waves are calm. With a max depth of eight feet and an incredibly convenient entry point, Napili Bay is one of the more trafficked areas due to its accessibility.

Honolua Bay

Another one of Kapalua’s Marine Life Conservation Districts, Honolua Bay is home to calm waters and an incredibly dense population of marine wildlife. Located near Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course, Honolua Bay features an immense area of coral that is home to hundreds of different marine species like parrotfish, turtles, hawkfish, and much more. While this is a moderately popular area, there are no lifeguards on duty at Honolua Bay, so it is always best to take caution when snorkeling in this gorgeous area. It is also important to note that there are no nearby restaurants, so consider packing a picnic if you plan on snorkeling Honolua Bay over the course of a day.

Kapalua Bay

A hot spot for snorkeling that is located near Kapalua Coastal Trail, Kapalua Bay is graced by white sands and easy snorkeling. Since Kapalua Bay features two unique reefs, the waters are extremely calm making this the ideal snorkeling spot for beginners. Kapalua Bay is easily accessible, as there is a parking lot nearby that welcomes beach guests daily. While swimming along either of the two reefs located in Kapalua Bay, you can expect to see marine species like parrotfish, hawkfish, and even crustaceans! If you plan on visiting Kapalua Bay for your next snorkeling expedition, consider arriving at the beach fairly early as its nearby parking lot fills up with visitors quickly.

While these are just four of the many popular snorkeling destinations located around the island, you should consider researching the difficulty of each snorkeling spot beforehand so that you can make an informed decision based on your skill level. To learn more about Kapalua, or to find an affordable luxury rental for your next Hawaiian getaway, visit Aloha Vacation Villa’s website today! We list all of our available Kapalua Bay rentals online so that individuals and families alike can find a luxury villa that suits their needs.

A Brief History of Hawaiian Music

In the late 1700s, immigrants from around the world brought their musical influence to the island of Hawaii. With varying styles of song came a diverse offering of musical instruments like the guitar, and what is now known as the ukulele. In fact, the origins of the ukulele can be traced back to Portuguese immigrants who brought a small, stringed guitar with them known as a braguinha. The ukulele would later give Hawaii its notorious sound from the unique four-stringed instrument. It wasn’t until the early 1900s when Hawaii began to develop their own sound and style of music. This was an important moment in Hawaiian history, as the 1930s marked the beginning of the golden age of Hawaiian music.

Legendary Hawaiian Musicians

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

One of the most notorious Hawaiian musicians of all time, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, or Iz for short, is known for his rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World.” Nicknamed Braddah Iz, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was revered as a Hawaiian activist whose main goal was to promote the independence of not only Hawaiian citizens, but Hawaii as a whole. This message can be heard throughout his discography, which changed many people’s view of what it actually means to be Hawaiian. Due to Iz’s weight problems throughout his life, he died in 1997 when he was just 38 years old. However, Iz’s music, as well as his legacy, lives on in Hawaiian culture today.

Alfred Apaka

Born in 1919, Alfred Apaka is a Hawaiian musician that is noted as one of the most influential musicians in Hawaiian history. Although he professionally recorded music for less than 10 years, Apaka was able to make a great deal of impact on Hawaiian culture in a very short period of time. After touring along the Pacific coast, Apaka was signed to Decca Records where he worked with legendary musician Bing Crosby. Though he began to gain notoriety in the early 1950s, he died shortly thereafter at the young age of 40. His album titled “The Immortal Hawaiian” pays tribute to his legacy by offering some of Apaka’s greatest hits to listeners.

Don Ho

Most known for his hit titled, “Tiny Bubbles,” Don Ho was a Hawaiian legend whose musical career began to skyrocket in the 1960s. Along with a number of hits that charted for nearly a year straight, Don Ho was also a TV personality. Making cameos on shows like The Brady Bunch and Batman, Don Ho’s superstardom later propelled him into receiving his own show in the 1970s that was called “The Don Ho Show.”  Ho later suffered from heart failure in 2007, but his legacy lives on to this day.

Gabby Pahinui

One of the greatest slack-key guitarists to come from Hawaii, Gabby Pahinui is a Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame member with a discography that exemplifies his importance in Hawaiian culture. Growing up in Honolulu, Pahinui worked during his childhood years to help his family. Pahinui would later go on to form the “Gabby Band” in the 1970s, and release four subsequent albums that solidified his place in Hawaiian musical history. A Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Pahinui’s sound can still be heard in Hawaiian music today.

Though these are just four prominent artists to originate from Hawaii, there is an endless amount of musical talent that has helped shape the overall sound and feel of Hawaiian music. Music has played a major role in how Hawaiian culture has grown and developed, and continues to remain as a focal point of Hawaiian tradition.

Niihau is one of the most unique islands in all of Hawaii. Also known as “The Forbidden Island,” Niihau is restricted to most individuals that visit Hawaii. In fact, Niihau is also restricted to residents of other Hawaiian islands. The history of Niihau dates back to the 1860s, when the island was purchased by the Sinclair’s. One of the stipulations that were put into place when the Sinclair family purchased Niihau was that only Niihauans could occupy the island. To this day, the rule still holds true where you can find as little as 30 people inhabiting the 70-square-mile island. While Niihau is technically off-limits to tourists and local Hawaiians, some individuals can take private tours of the island after paying the right price.

Nicknamed the “Garden Island,” Kauai is the oldest island in all of Hawaii. Kauai attracts the active tourist who is seeking adventure, as there is an endless amount of hiking, ziplining, and a variety of other outdoor activities worth considering. From overgrown cliffsides to breathtaking waterfalls, there is never a dull moment while exploring Kauai. Kauai is also home to some of the best Hawaii regional cuisine, a highly specialized style of cooking that utilizes the islands fruits, vegetables, fish, and cattle to create a delicious offering of appetizers, main dishes, and desserts.

Oahu is the third largest island in Hawaii, and is home to some of the most popular beaches. Tourists visiting Oahu can experience the vastness of the island by taking one of the many offered helicopter tours. If you feel more daring, however, you can experience the thrill of flight by going skydiving above the island. If you prefer a laid-back day of lounging by the ocean, you can visit Waikiki, one of the most famous beaches in all of Hawaii. Home to Honolulu, the state’s capital, you can be sure that you will never run out of fun activities to fill your day with while you enjoy your vacation.

The second biggest island in Hawaii, Maui is where Hawaii regional cuisine originated. Since then, the surrounding islands of Hawaii have been able to adopt the outstanding style of cooking that uses fresh ingredients local to Hawaii. Maui is also home to Kapalua Bay, and D.T. Fleming Beach, which we have covered extensively in our previous posts of things to do in Kapalua. With plenty of walking trails, beaches, and excellent restaurants, it’s no wonder that Maui is repeatedly voted as the best island in the United States. If you are looking for the perfect location to experience all that Hawaii has to offer, Maui is a clear frontrunner.

Molokai is the fifth biggest island in Hawaii and sports some of the tallest sea cliffs in the entire world! There are plenty of fun activities for visitors to experience like snorkeling, hiking, swimming, and more. Since Molokai offers moderate temperatures year round, there is never a bad time to visit the lush island. For tourists that love trekking deep into the wilderness, Molokai is home to Halawa Valley, a moderate hike that is home to gorgeous views and towering waterfalls. For this reason, Molokai is one of the best islands to visit if the seclusion that comes from nature is something that interests you.

One of the less trafficked islands in Hawaii, Lanai is ideal for visitors who are looking for solitude in a tropical paradise. While Lanai is home to luxury lodging, it is also known for its backroad adventures and offroading tours. Not only is Lanai known for its outdoor tours, it also features three of the highest rated golf courses in all of Hawaii. Manele Golf Course has been graced by some of golf’s greatest athletes as it’s challenging holes are accompanied by beautiful oceanside views. If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of some of the major Hawaiian islands, Lanai is the perfect choice for your needs.

What once was home to a bombing site for the United States military is now an uninhabitable island that is restricted to the public. Kahoolawe is the smallest of the Hawaiian islands, and can only be visited during volunteer opportunities to restore the island’s natural vegetation. Choosing to volunteer on the island of Kahoolawe is a brave task, as the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission has repeatedly stated that the island and its surrounding waters are home to unexploded ordnance from when it was a bombing range for the United States military. If you are seeking to restore Kahoolawe’s habitat, consider learning more about its available volunteer opportunities.

The Island of Hawaii

Rightfully nicknamed the “Big Island,” The Island of Hawaii is the largest of the eight islands. A unique experience when compared to Hawaii’s seven other islands, The Island of Hawaii lets visitors experience every type of climate as it is home to sunshine, snow, volcanoes, and tropical forests. One of the most intriguing points of interest, however, is The Island of Hawaii’s Punaluu Beach. Escape the Weather

One of the biggest reasons people choose to visit Hawaii in the winter is to escape the frigid weather of their hometown. Tourists who travel from freezing temperatures are overcome with joy after stepping off of their flight and being greeted by the warm Hawaiian breeze. Not only will you enjoy the warm weather that graces Hawaii daily, you will love how easy it is to pack your suitcase. While shorts, swimming trunks, and flip flops are essential to ensuring your Hawaiian getaway is a success, you should also consider packing a pair of slacks or a formal dress if you plan on eating at a high-end restaurant while visiting.

Enjoy the Beaches

Many people in the United States do not live near a beach, and even if they do, it may not be warm enough to spend a day relaxing next to the ocean. This is one of the major perks for many who visit Hawaii. There are plenty of beaches on the island that are worth exploring, and most of the beaches offer fun activities like snorkeling, surfing, bodyboarding, and much more. From Kapalua Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach, to Oneloa Bay and Slaughterhouse Beach, there are countless spots along the ocean that are perfect for relaxing while soaking up the sun.

Experience Hawaiian Culture

Hawaiian culture is unique when compared to the rest of the United States. For example, Hawaii regional cuisine is an exclusive style of cooking that utilizes native fruits, vegetables, and animals to create a truly unique culinary experience. This is just one aspect of Hawaii that has become popular among both visitors and residents. Those traveling to Hawaii will enjoy experiencing a different way of living where days are filled with relaxation and adventure.

These are just three reasons one may choose to visit Hawaii. Whatever your reason may be, you will want to experience Hawaii properly. For this reason, you should consider reserving your vacation rental with Aloha Vacation Villas.
