Nakalele Blowhole is a natural geyser on Maui’s island where seawater that is trapped in an underwater lava tube seeks a path of escape. If you visit on a day where there is a strong wind and big surf, then you might be entertained with an eruption every few minutes! Make sure to keep the sun to your back so that you can catch a glimpse of the rainbow that appears in the mist of the eruption. An even bigger bonus is that whales are frequently spotted breaching the surface near the blowhole during the months of December through May. Make sure to find dry rocks to stand on and stay a safe distance from the blowhole. For all of its natural beauty, there are dangers to be respectful of.
Black Rock Beach
Black Rock was formed from one of the last lava flows on this side of the island. Situated on the north end of Ka’anapali Beach, it is a beautiful rocky outcrop that is perfect for cliff jumping. While that phrase may make this activity sound scary, this is actually a popular activity for people of all ages. In addition to jumping into the ocean, there is ample opportunity for snorkeling and even spotting some of the famous Hawaiian sea turtles! If you have younger children, you should be aware that the water does get deep pretty quickly and they would probably have more fun playing in the surf at the edge of the sand.
Take some time to explore the mountains and experience stunning scenic trails in Maui. Whether you are an experienced rider, or this will be your first time, you are sure to enjoy yourself on any of the tours available on the island. Consider taking a ride on the west side of the island, or even one at sunset. You will be in awe at the beauty of the colors the setting sun creates as it disappears beneath the ocean. These guided tours are friendly for people of all ages, including kids.
Kohol, or Humpback whales, migrate to the waters off of Maui every winter. If you have never experienced the pleasure of whale watching, then you definitely want to make time for your family to go on a whale watching tour! For the best opportunity see whales, make sure to book your trip between January and March. Humpback whales are in the waters off of Maui in the winter as this is their breeding and birthing time. This is also a time to raise their calves in safety.
