At Aloha Vacation Villas, we want you to explore all that Kapalua Bay has to offer, which is why we provide a variety of Hawaiian vacation rentals for you to use. From condos and apartments to homes and luxury villas, you are sure to find what you’re looking for. Contact us today to book your Hawaiian vacation rental and experience the aloha spirit in Maui!

Aloha ‘Aina

Aloha has a very broad meaning and can be combined with a number of other words to indicate the love of different things. Aloha ‘aina refers to a love of the land that includes a desire to nurture and care for the land. This phrase is one that is commonly used in recycling and conservation programs throughout the islands.

Mahalo

If your parents taught you to say please and thank you, then you’ll definitely want to make sure that you say thank you the Hawaiian way — mahalo! You can use this phrase often, as it is a direct replacement for thank you.

Keiki

Keiki means child or children, which means that you’ll likely see this word at the top of the children’s menu at restaurants, or on signs indicating children’s activities and events. If you’re traveling with your children, then be sure to look for this word to discover what fun things might be happening during your stay in Kapalua Bay.

E komo mai

E komo mai is a phrase that you’ll probably see in many places that you enter, as it means welcome. At Aloha Vacation Villas, we definitely want all of our guests to feel welcome during their time in our Hawaiian vacation rentals, which is why we strive to offer a number of different amenities that are sure to enhance your vacation.

Hale

Hale means home or house, and Haleakala means house of the sun. In fact, you should schedule a day to visit Haleakala National Park to view the dormant shield volcano that features one of the world’s largest volcanic craters.

Aloha Wau la ‘Oe

We think that aloha wau la ‘oe is one that should be used as much as possible with the ones you love, after all, it means “I love you.” Whether you are celebrating a romantic moment in Maui or are traveling with your family, try to use this Hawaiian phrase as often as possible.

Shaka

The shaka is actually a hand symbol where the thumb and pinky finger are extended, the three remaining fingers are folded in, and the hand is twisted slightly side to side. The symbol, which means “how are you?” or “how’s it going?” is used both in surfing culture and also in island culture.

Ma uka

These are both directional terms that you might hear people using. Mauka refers to upland and makai refers to seaward. For example, you could tell someone that you’ll be ma uka for the day doing zipline activities.

Pono

Pono is a word that can have a variety of meanings but is typically used to describe something as having righteousness. Hawaiian culture places a great emphasis on moral character leading to happiness. In fact, the state motto, “Ua mau ke o ka aina i ka pono”, translates to “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness”.

Vog

Interestingly, the word vog sounds very similar to its English counterpart — smog. When used, vog refers to the smog from the volcano on the Big Island that periodically covers the islands. If you have allergies, the vog could trigger a reaction, so make sure you have your medication with you while you’re exploring Maui.

Haole

Traditionally, haole means foreigner. It typically refers to Caucasian people in modern times, and can sometimes be used in a derogatory manner. Being sensitive to cultural customs through your words and actions should help you to avoid this label.

Honu

Honu means green sea turtle, which are commonly spotted in the waters around the island, and sometimes even on the beaches. If you love sea turtles, then you’ll be happy to know that there are a variety of souvenirs that you can purchase. From jewelry and tattoos to clothing and photographs, you are sure to find the Hawaiian souvenir you want.

Ohana

For any fan of Disney’s® Lilo & Stitch, the word ohana is probably already well known. Ohana means family. When visiting restaurants in Maui, if you see that meals are served ohana-style, then you can expect family-style dishes.

Howzit?

Across the Hawaiian islands, Hawaiian Pidgin is a unique language that combines English words with Hawaiian words. Interestingly enough, Pidgin has actually become a language of its own. Howzit is a great example of Hawaiian Pidgin, and it essentially means “hello, how are you, how’s it going?”

Ono Grindz

This phrase is a combination of two words. Ono actually has two different meanings — it’s a fish, and it also means delicious. On a side note, the ono fish is delicious! Grindz means food. If you hear someone use these words together — ono grindz — then you want to be sure to ask them where they ate!

Broke da mouth (also mouf or mout)

The first time you hear this phrase, you might think someone is talking about a horrible accident. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, this phrase is used to refer to something that was so delicious that it broke da mouth. If you are looking for some of the best places to eat during your time in Kapalua Bay, then be sure to ask one of our team members at Aloha Vacation Villas. We’d love to share some of our favorite local restaurants with you!

Da Kine

Da kine is the Hawaiian version of whatchamacallit. Essentially, this is a great expression to fill the space of a word that you can’t recall. It is so flexible that it can also be used to mean something is the real deal. Listen for the word in context to understand what the speaker means.

1. Leaked Liquids

Solution – zip-top bags

One of the most frustrating situations that many travelers have experienced is the sight of their shampoo, conditioner, or other liquid all over the contents of their suitcase. Sound familiar? If you’ve been part of the unfortunate group of people to have leaked liquids in your suitcase, then you’ll want to make sure to follow our tips for packing liquids.

Part of the problem with leaking liquids is the change in air pressure as the airplane takes off and lands. One of the best ways to ensure that you don’t have soggy clothes is to wrap all of your liquids in zip-top bags or plastic containers. Speaking of properly packing liquids, don’t forget to follow TSA guidelines for carry-on liquids — make sure that all of your liquids are under the 3.4-ounce limit, and fit into a one-quart plastic bag.

2. Overpacking

Solution – pack strategically

This is perhaps one of the most common mistakes that travelers make. Part of the reason that so many people over-pack is that they’re concerned with having everything they could possibly need for their trip. The truth is, however, you don’t need to pack for every possible situation you might encounter when traveling.

Here are our top tips for packing only what you need:

  • Stick to a basic color palette
  • Don’t pack outfits for every day
  • Choose three tops for every bottom
  • Include the basics — jeans, shorts, sweaters
  • Layers, layers, layers
  • By sticking to a basic color palette, you’ll be able to mix and match almost all the clothing items you pack, which means you’ll avoid overpacking.

3. Oversize and Overweight Bags

Solution – measure your bag prior to travel

Since so many travelers make the mistake of overpacking, the obvious solution would seem to purchase a bigger suitcase. The problem with this idea is that airlines have strict regulations about the size of bags that you can carry on. If you do not check the dimensions of your bag prior to boarding, you may find that your carry-on luggage is being transferred to the hold underneath the passengers. Checking your bag at the gate may not seem like a big deal. If the airline loses your luggage, however, your vacation can quickly turn into a nightmare.

4. Ignoring Weather Forecasts

Solution – check the weather while packing

Most travelers have experienced the frustration of being stuck with shorts in snowy weather or sweaters in blistering heat. As frustrating as this can be, the easy solution is to check the weather while you’re packing. Weather forecasts can change dramatically within just a few days, so don’t put yourself at the mercy of Mother Nature — check the weather as you’re picking out outfits. That being said, it’s never a bad idea to throw in a light jacket or a pair of shorts to account for an unexpected shift in the weather.

5. Incorrect Shoe Packing

Solution – shoe bags

You want to make sure that you don’t start your trip with dirty clothes. While you may have packed clean clothes, if you didn’t pack your shoes correctly, then they will be the reason that you are stuck with dirty clothes. The best solution is to pack your shoes in shoe bags. If you don’t have shoe bags or other plastic bags handy, then be sure to pack your shoes with the soles facing away from your clothes. Since footwear can be heavy, don’t pack a lot. Choose a few versatile pairs that will work for a variety of occasions.

Pro tip – since shoes are some of the heaviest items in your bag, make sure to pack them towards the wheel end of your bag for proper weight balance.

6. Forgetting a Tote

Solution – carry a tote on the plane

It’s important not to forget to pack a tote or other small bag. The reason for this is that you’ll need something to carry the water bottle, sunblock, souvenirs, and other items that will make sightseeing more comfortable. Since it would be easy to forget to pack a tote, you can carry your tote bag onto the plane to hold any snacks or books that you might want. When your trip is done, use your tote bag to hold all your dirty laundry. This will make it easy to quickly pop in a load of clothes to the washing machine upon your return.

7. Procrastination

Solution – prioritize advance planning

Some people are more prone to procrastination than others, and if you’re in this group, then you want to make sure to prioritize planning your packing. Waiting until the last minute to pack could result in a bag filled with nothing really helpful for your trip. Since you are taking a vacation to relax and enjoy time away from your daily responsibilities, make sure to start off on the right foot by planning in advance. This will give you time to think about the items you’ll need, check the weather, and start your vacation on a positive note.

Follow our packing tips to avoid the most common mistakes that people make when traveling, and get the most enjoyment from your time away. Plan your vacation to Kapalua Bay by contacting Aloha Vacation Villas today to learn more about the many benefits that our Hawaiian vacation rentals offer.

In fact, you can even reserve your tee times up to 45 days in advance! With more than fifteen golf courses to choose from, you could golf every single day of your vacation if you wanted to!

Hiking Trails

One of the most amazing things about Maui is that it offers dozens of climate zones and a wide variety of hiking trails. Whether you are interested in hiking some of the alpine desert trails, rainforest trails, or even trails that end at stunning waterfalls, you are sure to find the perfect trail that matches your skill and interest level. The Waihee Ridge Trail is about two and a half miles in length with moderate difficulty. You will be able to see Waihee Gorge and Makamakaole Gulch. Mahana Ridge Trail connects the Maunalei Arboretum to the heart of the Kapalua Resort. While you will be able to enjoy spectacular views of Mokupe’a and Honokahua Gulches, you should be prepared for a strenuous hike of approximately 20 miles.

Ziplining

One of Maui’s most popular activities, ziplining allows you to take advantage of a unique view of the island’s plant and wildlife. There are several different zipline tours available, which means that you can choose the intensity, duration, and location. No two tours are alike, so be sure to try them all for the ultimate experience! There are zipline tours of plantations, bamboo forests, and the Pacific coastline.

Tennis

Kapalua Resort offers Kapalua Tennis Garden for your enjoyment. Lushly landscaped, the tennis complex offers 10 PLEXIPAVE™ courts that are paired in tiered clusters. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you will find many things to enjoy, including their live ball clinics! They offer weekly, drop-in doubles and clinics, so that guests can meet other players of similar abilities for additional play time during vacation.

Going to the beach is one of the top-rated vacations for most people. Sun, sand, and surf provide the ideal environment to relax and play for kids and adults alike. At Aloha Vacation Villas, we know that the beach has so much to offer, and so today, we will take a look at some of the beaches of Maui. We hope that they give you ideas to try for your next vacation. Call today to book your Hawaiian Vacation Rental today!

Oneloa Beach

Also known as Ironwoods Beach, Oneloa is a quarter mile of uncrowded sand and surf next to the Kapalua resort. Oneloa means “long sand.” If the wind is something you don’t enjoy, then schedule your visit during the morning, as the afternoons can become very windy. There is a shallow reef near the shoreline, towards the eastern end of the beach, and this is where the parking lot path will lead you. However, you can just keep walking until you discover the nice sandy bottom at the far end.

D.T. Flemming Beach Park

If you’re looking for a beach with lots of sand, full facilities, and shade, then you will want to check out the D.T. Flemming Beach Park. It is much less touristy than other beaches on Maui, which will mean more space to play. If you enjoy surfing or boogie boarding, keep an eye out for the right combination of wind, tide, and swells to catch some great sets. Be careful to pay attention to the surf forecast, however, as conditions can sometimes become dangerous with high surf and strong rip currents.

Kapalua Resort Bay

Winner of the title of America’s Best Beach in 1991, Kapalua Bay boasts picturesque views, plentiful palm trees, luxuriously soft sand, and pristine waters. Whether you prefer to soak up the sun or explore the marine life, you will not be disappointed. The waves are gentle, and there is vibrant marine life due to the sheltered sanctuary that Kapalua Bay provides.

Honolua Bay

For those of you who enjoy snorkeling and diving, Honolua Bay is one of the best places to enjoy these activities. As part of the Marine Life Conservation District, there is no fishing allowed. Honolua means “two harbors” in Hawaiian and was historically used for shipping and receiving supplies. You are sure to see plenty of fish, turtles, and coral if you swim out a little from the beach.

Mokule’ia Bay

Mokule’ia Bay, more commonly called Slaughterhouse Beach, is a gorgeous, crescent-shaped beach. The beach earned its common name due to the slaughterhouse that used to be situated on the edge of the cliffs. Today, however, the building is no longer in existence, so you don’t need to worry. There isn’t a lot of parking available, so you will need to be careful when you do park, as the beach is right off the highway. Sometimes the water is cloudy, but on calm days, you can enjoy quality snorkeling.

Kapalua Bay offers so many exciting activities, events, dining and shopping opportunities that it can be hard to choose which ones to try. Aloha Vacation Villas knows that one of the reasons you are interested in a Hawaiian vacation rental is so you can enjoy all that our beaches have to offer. Now that you know a little bit more about each of these beaches, call us to book your Hawaiian beach rental today!

Surfing

Whether you are a beginner surfer, or you have been an avid surfer your whole life, you know that a becalmed ocean is never enjoyable for those who want to surf. If you are hoping to come during the perfect time when the waves are breaking set after set, then you want to plan your Hawaiian trip for the winter months, especially in December and January, when the biggest waves tend to hit the north shores of all of our islands. For those of you who are true beginners, be sure to stick to the south sides of the islands, or plan your vacation during the summer months when waves are calmer.

Snorkeling and Swimming

If snorkeling and swimming are more your speed, then you definitely want to plan your Hawaiian vacation during the summer when the waters are warmer, the waves are calmer, and the skies are sunnier. These conditions all make for the best viewing experiences when you are snorkeling. In fact, you can snorkel and swim year round, but if you are looking for the ideal time to fully enjoy either of these activities, then make sure to book your trip during the summer months and call Aloha Vacation Villas to book your Hawaiian vacation rental today.

Hiking

It is no secret that Hawaii has a multitude of gorgeous hiking trails that are suitable for all ages and abilities. Whether you want to explore the mountains, or hike near the coastline, you will find the perfect trails to enjoy. Summer is once again the best month to plan your trip if hiking is high on your list of things to do, given that there are more daylight hours and the trails tend to be drier. Be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen, as it does get pretty hot here during the summer.

Whale Watching

Each year, whales make the journey from Alaska to Hawaii to give birth to their calves during the winter months. The best time to plan your visit is between the months of February and April as this is peak season for them to be seen. Make sure to travel to our western shores for the best opportunities to spend your time whale watching, and don’t forget to fully charge your phone so that you can take pictures and videos to your heart’s content.

The Beaches

The beach is one of our favorite spots at which to spend time, and we know that many people will agree with us that beaches are incredibly relaxing environments. Hawaii’s beaches are some of the most spectacular in the world. While there are plenty of beaches with the type of sand that you would expect to see, there are also beaches with black sand. Waianapanapa State Park has granules of sand that are pitch black and were created when the surf pounded on a fresh lava flow. If you’ve never set foot on a black sand beach, then you need to be careful if you choose to walk barefoot, as it gets much hotter than white sand.

The Culture

Hawaii has one of the most ethnically diverse populations and culture of any of the states. You will find influences from many foreign cultures in addition to the Hawaiian culture. The Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Samoan, and Spanish are just a few of the cultures that deeply influenced and shaped Hawaii into the amazing place that it is today. With all of these outside influences, you will be pleased to know that the Hawaiian culture is still alive and well. It is not uncommon to hear people speaking in Hawaiian in the grocery store, and many of the streets, cities, and beaches still retain their Hawaiian names.

The Weather

For those of you who live in places where winter can be brutal, you will probably smile when you hear that Hawaii does indeed have a winter season. While it is nothing like what you experience, you will probably notice that the natives bundle up, as 75 degrees is a little chilly for them when the average year-round temperature is 85. If you live somewhere that experiences a true winter season with lots of snow and ice, then you will enjoy our winter season in Hawaii with temperatures that will seem quite balmy in comparison.

There are countless reasons why you should visit Hawaii, and we will continue this discussion in our next post. When you are ready to come to our beautiful island, be sure to contact Aloha Vacation Villas to learn about the variety of Hawaiian vacation rentals that we offer and then reserve yours today!

Sunscreen

Being protected from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays starts with having a sunblock that can sufficiently provide you with coverage that lasts throughout the day. While there are many variations of sunscreen available, SPF 30 or SPF 45 sunblock should thoroughly protect you from potential sunburns. According to the EPA, SPF 30 effectively blocks 97 percent of the sun’s UVB rays, while SPF 45 blocks 99 percent of UVB rays. For total coverage, consider a sunscreen that markets itself as “broad-spectrum,” as these specialized formulas are designed to protect your skin from UVA rays as well.

Multiple Swimsuits

If you’re traveling to Hawaii, there is a good chance that you plan on soaking up the sun on the beach, swimming in the ocean, or relaxing poolside. Given the amount of time it takes for a swimsuit to dry, we recommend packing multiple swimsuits in your luggage. Packing extra swimming gear will allow you to have a dry swimsuit while your wet swimsuit dries, and will ensure that you never have to put on a wet swimsuit again.

Formal Clothing

Kapalua is home to regional gourmet cuisine available from a variety of upscale restaurants. For this reason, we suggest that you pack a formal outfit that you can wear during a night of fine dining. To ensure that you’re packing an appropriate wardrobe for formal dining, plan in advance by researching the restaurant’s atmosphere and mood via their website. More times than not, a restaurant’s website will have pictures of guests with their meals which will give you a better idea as to which attire is most appropriate.

Sunglasses

If you suffer from light sensitivity and experience the headaches that can come with it, sunglasses should be at the top of your list of essentials to pack. Since you will likely spend most of your time around water while visiting Hawaii, you should consider investing in a pair of polarized sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses are incredibly efficient at neutralizing the glare that bounces off of reflective surfaces like water, decreasing the chances that you will experience the headaches or eye strain that comes with the sun’s brightness.
